Thinking Again

I watched Blood Diamond tonight. and while I have to say there wasn't much there that I hadn't read about or seen or whatever...it was a good movies, and it obviously brought forward things that many people hadn't been aware of (I was lucky(?) enough to have two relatively verbal women sitting behind me). But it did get me thinking about something that's been rattling around in my head. and I can't quite solidify it, and I think part of that is I don't have neough information...but...well I gues I'll rattle it out and maybe it'll help me make heads or tails or something of it.

There isn't a lot of research and info available on civil wars. Only recently have people bothered to start documenting things. But they've found that there is a tie between certain natural resources and civil war. Things such as oil, drugs, non fuel minerals... Here's what I'm thinking: would the numbers of deaths be so high, and the violence so extreme in these modern wars if the first world countries didn't place such value on these items. We know that the social maturity level of third world countries is lower than the first world countries - many/most at war are ~teenage level, so if you gave a bag of skittles to 2 teenage brothers, and told them that you'd give them $20 for each green one they brought back to you, logically you know that this is going to make trouble. Granted, there si research that also shows that right now as a general rule the quiality of life is going up for everyone (except Africa which is still struggling with HIV amongst other things) So I don't think necessarily that First world countries should completely leave these third world nations alone, obviously the medical technology, the health care information is helping. I'd guess there's other things like agriculture and communications devices, and other information that is being shared that also contributes. But I can't help to think that if the country I live in, and the US, and Britain, etc. were to be more responsible or aware of the influence (again, I need more info and numbers to back up my thoughts here) they have negatively on these coutries by bringin in the demand for their resources, but not providing any sort of guidance or stability for these countries that are still in a state of development (as are these "advanced" countries)...well if they'd take the time for guiding it through to begin with, then maybe they wouldn't have to go in when everything goes to hell and kill even more people in order to stop what I think they had a hand in starting.. But then again, the US always likes a good excuse to start flashing their weapons, so maybe this isn't just something that hasn't be thought up yet. But I'm just rambling. I mean, what would I know?
